How can I contact a Wikipedia admin when I'm IP-banned?

Question

I chose a username that was against the rules of Wikipedia. I did not know I was breaking a rule. Now that account plus my provider is banned. (Possibly that will even have an effect on other members of Wikipedia as well, because I was on a well-known provider.) Obviously there's no way for me to clarify the situation now, because I am banned from editing discussion pages to talk to the administrator.

I think this is unfair - the admin could have just warned me about the username and given me the chance to choose a different username. But now that I'm completely banned I can't even choose another name and have the old one simply deleted.

Please help.

Send an email to unblock-en-l at lists.wikimedia.org and those who monitor that mailing list will consider what can be done. If your ip is blocked, they can create a new account for you. And yes, you are right, you should have been warned and given a chance to chose a new user name before you were blocked. If you do have access to a computer which uses another ip you could simply create the new account for yourself. It will then probably work on the blocked ip. (usually such range blocks only prevent creation of new accounts, they don't block editing by existing accounts.)

Try the above Wikipedia chatrooms. You can probably find an administrator their with whom you can plead your case. Be very considerate, don't be afraid to grovel as needed, and don't whine or act surprised if they don't want you as part of their community. If you need an IRC client, look up Mirc or Xchat.

wow, that's so unfair. i would try using a friends computer or something. different internet server, different ip address. it's worth a shot.
